Gus Watanabe, Passionate About Public Education

Gus Watanabe is running for a seat on the Board of St. James-Assiniboia School Division as a trustee in the West Ward.

Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, Gus has lived in Whitbourne, NL, Kenora, London & Thunder Bay, ON and Fukui, Japan. He's worked and lived in Winnipeg since 2002.

 

Gus Watanabe is currently a high school guidance counsellor, serving daily at the intersection of the justice, social services, medical (including psychiatric) and education systems.

Gus moved from doing his M. Ed. in Cross-Cultural, Sociological and Philosophical Foundations in Education to applying his experience & knowledge towards producing real world change.

 

Gus graduated from The University of Western Ontario with a B. A. (Honours) in a double major of history and English literature. He also graduated from Lakehead University with a B.Ed. (Honours) with an Intermediate/Senior focus with a specialization in history and English. He completed his post-baccalaureate diploma in education (PBDE) at The University of Manitoba with an education administration and guidance focus. Among his many career experiences, he’s taught Grades 6-12 in PE, math, ELA, history and geography.

Early in his career, Gus worked with young offenders in open custody, closed custody and correctional facilities.

Gus Watanabe has worked with a wide variety of students from the incarcerated to Harvard bound. He's also worked with parents and school communities in need of help or direction.
 

Gus Watanabe is running for trustee in SJASD’s West Ward to promote democratic transparency and accountability in governance and decision making. Trust in our public institutions has to be rebuilt.

People have a right to know who their trustees are and what they value.
